RE-BRANDING: Hotel/Condo Conversion

UrbanAmerica in a joint venture with Buena Vista Hospitality Group has acquired and has converted the former Sheraton World Resort and Spa into a condo-hotel. The property, now named International Plaza Resort & Spa is an existing and fully operational hotel, spa, and is directly adjacent to Sea World and within a few miles of both Disney and Universal theme parks.

OPINION: UA is taking some of the hotel rooms and converting them into condos. Construction has began on the hotel. This a great chance for second home investments and time shares. What's great about is that you would have all the amenities of a hotel built in. The re-branding of a hotel is not an easy task, a lot is involved in getting your name out and in promoting your product in the market. The marketing sales campaign is out!

Battle of the Overpass - May 26, 1937

Union organizers obtained a permit to distribute handbills at the gates of the Rouge plant. Over fifty union representatives, including many women, arrived at the plant to distribute circulars which cited the Wagner Act and entreated workers to join the UAW.

Several men had been stationed around the entrance to the Rouge including Angelo Caruso, boss of the Down River gang, wrestlers Warshon Sarkisien and Ted Gries, boxer Oscar Jones, and Ford servicemen. The organizers were ordered to leave, but witnesses say, before they even had a chance, the attack began.

Editorial: Hempstead Needs a Visionary Plan

Newsday
October 11, 2007

*Hempstead Village has unfortunately shut the door on a $2 billion project that had the promise of restoring it as a thriving regional center. The vision was too big, too grand and too upscale for some, especially the personal and political opponents of Mayor Wayne Hall.

OPINION: Mayor Hall, after 14 months of negotiating, still didn't have the votes; he refuses to let the village "rot away." UA should participate in the revitalization by offering 15%-20% of affordable housing

Hempstead Redevelopment Plan Scuttled
By ANNIE CORREAL

*IN a surprise turnaround, the Hempstead Village mayor has withdrawn plans for a $2 billion redevelopment project that would have razed 26 acres downtown and replaced shabby storefronts and vacant lots with 2,500 condominiums and a new commercial district.

OPINION: Plan was strangled and sucked into the wind. Ignorance play a huge part by the trustees.

UrbanAmerica Plan Pulled

UrbanAmerica plan pulled
By David Winzelberg

*Just before voting on a $2 billion plan to revitalize Hempstead Village's downtown, Mayor Wayne Hall pulled UrbanAmerica’s proposal from consideration Tuesday night.
Citing “irreconcilable differences” between village trustees over the proposed redevelopment, Hall mentioned concerns about the mortgage rates and a declining housing market.

Opinion: It might have been the best move to nix the plan out of the Trustee's hands. This might create another opportunity to present the proposed site plan once again. The proposed plan would have created about 5,200 construction jobs, 1,200 permanent jobs and about $35 million a year in tax revenue.

Hempstead to Vote as Last

ONE MORE TIME... The Village of Hempstead will vote tonight on UrbanAmerica's plan to redevelop 26 acres of its downtown.
The $2 billion proposal to build 2,500 condos, 600,000 square feet of retail and office space and a performing arts center has been debated by the village board of trustees for months and several votes on the project were scheduled and postponed.
There was speculation that a vote last week was postponed because Hempstead Mayor Wayne Hall didn’t have the votes necessary to get the plan approved. Tonight’s meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Village Hall.

G.M. May Close 2 More Plants Under Deal

G.M. May Close 2 More Plants Under Deal
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

*DETROIT (AP) -- The tentative contract between General Motors Corp. and the United Auto Workers would allow GM to close a plant each in Michigan and Indiana and possibly shut down several other facilities, according to a detailed copy of the agreement.
The moves are the downside of job security pledges that the UAW won in the negotiations, including commitments for new products at 16 plants. About 74,000 hourly GM workers will vote on the pact starting this week, with a final tally to be done by Oct. 10.
